Donnelly, J. (2015). These shallow graves. New York, NY: Delacorte Press.
Summary: Jo Monfort doesn’t want the life set out for her. Instead of hosting large parties and keeping up with the socialites, Jo would rather be working out on the streets as a journalist. When Jo’s father accidentally shoots himself, Jo thinks there is more to the story, and finds a chance to put her sleuthing skills to the test. With the help of a handsome reporter from her father’s newspaper, Jo sets out to uncover the answer to the heartbreaking question: was her father murdered?
Appeal: This story is set in the 1890s and should appeal to teens who enjoy reading historical fiction. There is a lot of mystery weaved throughout the book to keep readers interested. There is a bit of romance, but the major plot of the story stick to Jo uncovering what happened to her father.
Weakness: Some of the plot twists in the book were a bit too predictable.
